When do you need a structural calculation?
Whenever you change the load-bearing parts of a building, or add extra load to them. For example when:
- Opening up or removing a load-bearing wall
- Adding a dormer or raising the roof
- Building an extension with new supports
- Raising the roof ridge
- Adding heavy loads to an existing roof or floor, such as a roof terrace

Do I need a calculation for a permit-free extension?
Often, yes. Permit-free does not mean the structure doesn't have to be right. The building must always meet the technical requirements of the Building Works Decree (Bbl).
Does the calculation specify which steel beam I need?
Yes. The calculation and the structural drawing state which section is needed and how it is supported.
